After three years of battling a rare and aggressive bone cancer known as chordoma , Léna, a young girl from the small village of Annéot in Yonne, passed away on June 3. She was just 10 years old . Tributes for her will be held next Tuesday at the town’s equestrian center, as reported by our colleagues at Bien Public.
The journey commenced in 2021 when Léna was only six years old. Complaining of back pain, her parents took her to the doctor, who ordered an MRI scan. The diagnosis revealed a tumor located in her spine. Initial medical interventions allowed her to overcome this hurdle.
€200,000 Raised for a Hopeful Future, Yet In Vain
However, disillusionment soon followed for Léna and her family. In 2022 , a new tumor was detected, this time in her brain . Subsequently, two more tumors appeared in her chest area. In September last year, her family decided to launch a fundraising campaign to finance a trip to the United States for innovative therapy. Nearly €200,000 was raised. Unfortunately, these treatments proved to be ineffective.
By May 2025 , doctors, in agreement with Léna’s family, decided to cease active treatments. Just days before she passed away, she attended an equestrian event in Semur-en-Auxois . Her mother, Séverine , won the race, crossing the finish line in tears. She dedicated this victory to her daughter, providing Léna with a final joyful memory.
The Power of Community Support
The story of Léna is one of resilience and the unyielding spirit of a young girl. Her situation drew significant attention from the community , sparking an enormous outpouring of support. Friends, family, and even strangers contributed to her fundraising campaign, demonstrating the powerful bond of unity in times of adversity.
Innovative Treatments and Their Limitations
Chordoma is a challenging cancer to treat. It occurs in the bones of the skull and spine, typically after the age of 30, making Léna’s case particularly rare. Most standard treatments include surgery and radiation, but the effectiveness varies widely among patients. Léna’s struggle serves as a stark reminder of the limitations within pediatric oncology and the urgent need for more research into rare cancers.
Importance of Hope and Advocacy
While Léna faced unimaginable challenges, her story has become a beacon of hope. Her family’s tireless efforts in advocating for new therapies highlight the importance of raising awareness about rare cancers. Organizations focused on pediatric research are critical for developing innovative treatment protocols to help future generations facing similar battles.
Legacy of Love and Remembrance
In the wake of Léna’s passing, tributes pour in from across the community, showcasing her impact on their lives. The upcoming tribute at the equestrian center aims to celebrate not just her life, but the enduring love she inspired around her. In moments of profound grief, communities often find strength and unity, which can serve as a method of healing for those left behind.
Léna’s journey is a poignant reminder of life, love, and the challenges many face against illnesses that seem insurmountable. In remembering her story, we shine a light on the importance of compassion and community support, and the critical need for ongoing research and innovative treatments for rare diseases such as chordoma. Each life touched by Léna serves as a testament to her resilience and spirit, demonstrating that even in loss, there can be a legacy of hope and strength.
