Halle (Sachsen-Anhalt) – As the peaceful bike demonstration concluded after 13 kilometers, gunshots rang out at August-Bebel-Platz!

The ammunition used consisted of small steel balls encased in plastic, primarily fired from air rifles. In this incident, the clothing of the cyclists seemingly mitigated the severity of their injuries. Nevertheless, such projectiles are dangerously effective—if they strike an eye, they can lead to blindness.
Police Secure Projectiles
The identity of the shooter remains unclear. However, it is evident that the shots were intentionally aimed at the biking demonstrators. “Multiple projectiles have been found and secured. Investigations into the assault are ongoing,” the police announced in a press release.
The demonstration, organized under the motto “World Bicycle Day, Mobility Transition, Transport Infrastructure,” rolled through Halles city area for 13 kilometers with over 1300 bike activists participating.
Cyclists demonstrating for better mobility
Activists and organizations participating in the event were advocating for sustainable urban mobility alternatives and the need for improved transport infrastructure. The peaceful atmosphere that characterized the event was abruptly disrupted by violence, evoking strong reactions from participants and onlookers alike. As authorities continue their investigation, community members are questioning the motives behind the shooting and calling for greater protective measures for public gatherings. The health and safety of participants in such demonstrations should always be a primary concern, making regard for their well-being paramount.
What’s clear is that the shooting overshadowed an important discussion about cycling and mobility in urban areas. Enhancing transport infrastructure not only fosters a greener environment but also creates safer spaces for commuters of all forms, including cyclists. Community engagement in such matters is fundamentally crucial for progress, and incidents like this threaten to derail meaningful dialogue. It is essential that authorities promptly address security measures to ensure that peaceful assemblies remain safe from violent interference in the future.
