A devastating fire broke out in a low-income housing building in Reims during the night of June 6, 2025, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives . The fire was reportedly ignited by an electric scooter that caught fire in one of the apartments, as confirmed by Reims Public Prosecutor François Schneider during a press briefing.
“Fires caused by this type of battery are extremely difficult to extinguish, as the cells tend to sustain themselves when burning, which explains the violence and rapid spread of the fire,” stated Schneider. He emphasized that the incident was clearly accidental and not the result of negligence.
The fire ignited in a fourth-floor apartment of the ten-story building, which was occupied by a 34-year-old man and two teenagers aged 13 and 15, who were his stepsons.
Tragic Outcomes and Casualties
The most junior of the teenagers succumbed to injuries after jumping from the fourth floor in an attempt to escape the flames. A charred body found in the apartment is likely that of his older brother. Meanwhile, their stepfather, who suffered severe burns, managed to survive the ordeal. The other victims included an 87-year-old woman and her 59-year-old son, who perished from smoke inhalation in the upper floors of the building.
In addition to the fatalities, one more individual sustained severe injuries, having been found burned and intoxicated by smoke. The total number of slight injuries was reported at 26, primarily due to smoke inhalation, as noted by the prosecutor.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight and was described as being of “extreme violence.” It wasn’t until around 3:45 AM that firefighters were able to bring it under control. Schneider remarked that the first responders described the scene as resembling a war zone, with residents fleeing the building in a panic. This chaotic evacuation complicated the assessment of the precise number of victims and the sequence of events leading up to the fire.
Community Response and Reaction
The community’s reaction to this tragic incident has been one of shock and grief. Local residents have expressed their condolences to the affected families and shared their memories of those lost. Many have come together to provide support for survivors, offering clothing, food, and shelter to those who lost their homes in the inferno.
In light of this fire, local authorities have promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and are urging residents to follow safety protocols related to the use of electric scooters and other devices powered by lithium batteries. The goal is to prevent similar tragedies in the future and ensure the safety of the community.
The Reims Public Prosecutor’s office will continue to monitor the situation closely as the investigation unfolds, aiming to provide clarity and justice for the victims and their families.
