CHP Leader Özgür Özel’s Strong Discontent Over Recent Detentions
In a recent press statement, the President of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Özgür Özel, voiced sharp concerns regarding the transfer of several individuals, including Beylikdüzü Mayor Murat Çalık, to six different cities. This move, described as unjust by Özel, came after the ongoing investigations into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB). He emphasized the severity of the situation by stating, “FETÖ’cüler ne zulümler yaptılar burada, buna tenezzül etmediler, bunu yapmadılar” (FETÖ members inflicted such tyranny here, yet did not stoop to this). His comments highlight the political climate in Turkey, where political figures often face harsh repercussions for their affiliations.
Visit to İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in Silivri Prison
On March 23, Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem İmamoğlu was detained and since then has been held in Silivri Prison. Özgür Özel visited him and took the opportunity to address the media outside the prison. He criticized the transfer of 12 detained individuals to various cities, stating that these actions represent a sinister strategy employed against political adversaries. He asserted, “Bize gözdağı vermek için yapıyorlar” (They do this to intimidate us), reflecting his view that the political opposition is under siege from state mechanisms.
Critical Statements Against Legal Proceedings
Özel specifically condemned the legal processes surrounding these detentions, referring to the treatment of detained mayors and party members as “zulüm” (oppression). He explained how the family members of the detained individuals now face additional burdens due to the relocations, making it nearly impossible for them to visit loved ones, especially in cases like that of Mayor Çalık, whose family now resides six hours away instead of just 20 minutes.
He stated, “Bu yapılan zulümdür. Yassıada mahkemelerinde yaşananlardan farklı değil dünkü yaşananlar, utanç filmi çekilmiştir” (What was done is oppression. What happened yesterday is no different from the trials at Yassıada; it’s a film of shame). His denunciation highlighted the ongoing strife between the ruling party and its opponents, drawing parallels to historical injustices faced by political prisoners.
Murat Çalık’s Case Highlights Injustice
Özel’s discontent specifically centered on the case of Murat Çalık, who has been a political ally and a symbol of opposition against the ruling party. “Murat Çalık’ın annesinden, eşinden ne istiyorsunuz?” (What do you want from Murat Çalık’s mother, his wife?) he demanded, articulating the emotional toll such actions have on families. His rhetoric reflects a broader narrative aimed at uniting party members and supporters against what they perceive as government overreach.
Allegations Against the AK Party
Özgür Özel further accused the ruling AK Party of attempting to exert control over vital regions like Gaziosmanpaşa and suggested a coordinated assault on individual rights and freedoms. He accused the party of orchestrating a wave of accusations and arrests aimed at eliminating political rivals without substantial evidence. Referring to the recent arrests, he stated, “Somut kanıt olmadan birçok iftira ve hakaretle yeni bir dalga gerçekleştirdiler” (They launched a new wave of accusations and insults without concrete evidence).
Concerns About Justice and Integrity
Highlighting the integrity of the judicial process, Özel emphasized the need for fair trials, mentioning that although the political landscape is turbulent, his resolve in seeking justice remains unwavering. He commented on the indictment related to the party’s internal affairs, deeming it “bomboş” (empty) and remarked on the lack of credible evidence backing the accusations.
He concluded his remarks with a direct critique of media portrayal, specifically targeting a publication he accused of spreading misinformation. “O iftira manşeti, iğrenç manşeti not ettim” (I noted that defamatory headline, that disgusting headline), he asserted, suggesting a forthcoming change in public sentiment.
A Call for Unity and Solidarity
In addressing the challenges faced by detained party members, Özgür Özel called for solidarity among party members and supporters, emphasizing that their struggle is not just for individual rights, but for the democratic integrity of Turkey. He reassured supporters by stating that these oppressive actions wouldn’t go unanswered and promised accountability for those responsible.
Özgür Özel’s passionate remarks reinforce the critical need for political dialogue in Turkey and signal an urgent call for justice amidst ongoing tensions. His call for unity not only resonates with party supporters but also serves as a reminder of the profound challenges facing democratic institutions in the country today.
