Major Developments in Istanbul’s Corruption Investigations: Former MP Arrested
On the fifth wave of investigative operations focusing on the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), four individuals, including former Republican People’s Party (CHP) MP Aykut Erdoğdu, have been put in custody and are awaiting a court decision regarding their detention.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has continued its investigations under various serious allegations, including being a leader of a criminal organization , membership in a criminal organization , extortion , bribery , qualified fraud , illegally obtaining personal data , and manipulating tenders . This investigative phase involved the detention of 34 individuals on these charges.
Among those arrested were notable political figures, including:

- Utku Caner Çaykara, Mayor of Avcılar

It has been alleged that Erdoğdu facilitated bribery schemes within the Istanbul Environment Protection and Waste Materials Assessment Industry and Trade Inc. (İSTAÇ) . Furthermore, Ali Sukas , the General Manager of Ağaç AŞ, is accused of soliciting money and vehicles from individuals and companies engaged in projects with İSTAÇ, allegedly acting under directives from İBB’s upper management to demand “commission” payments.
Alongside Erdoğdu, those taken into custody include Sukas , Veysel Erçevik , Deputy Mayor of Beylikdüzü, and Gürkan Polat , assistant to Mehmet Murat Çalık , Mayor of Beylikdüzü. Their proceedings have been processed by the public prosecutor’s office, which has now requested their detention pending trial.
