It was three o’clock in the morning when Mylène Beretti received the devastating news that flames were engulfing part of her boats in the port of Calvi . “It was a neighboring boat owner who managed to save one,” recounts the owner of Giru Mare , a tour boat company. Like her, the owners of two other similar businesses were also targeted by fires that occurred during the night of June 2nd to June 3rd. “Today, there is nothing but confusion … But the sector of boaters is on edge on the island, we know it attracts greed,” she laments. Recently, fires have ravaged boats in Saint-Florent and Ajaccio . “We weren’t as relaxed as previous seasons,” admits Mylène Beretti. “But we never imagined something like this would happen. We are not thugs; we are young people from here. This was our fourth season in harmony with the other boaters.”
“The Season Looks Complicated, We’re Already Battling with Insurance Companies”
Every year, from April to October , twelve people can board each of the two semi-rigid boats of Giru Mare for tours to the Scandola , Piana , Girolata , or the Désert des Agriates . In the peak season, six trips are made a day. “The season looks complicated,” sighs Mylène Beretti. “One of the boats was brand new. This fire endangers the financial health of the company. We still don’t know how we’ll manage with our employees.”
This summer, in addition to Mylène, two other captains and a hostess were supposed to work during the season. “We will do everything we can to keep them,” she assures. “We are already battling with insurance companies to see what solutions are available. Luckily, we have a third boat that was not at the port that night, and one of the damaged boats may be repairable fairly quickly after the expert assesses it. But for the last one, the damage is more severe…”
As a dedicated activist, Mylène Beretti has received support from the Core in Fronte movement. “Mylène is a hardworking person, recognized and appreciated in Calvi and Balagna ,” they stated in a social media post before denouncing: “In February 2025, Core In Fronte indicated at the Corsican Assembly that the leisure boating sector had been under pressure for several years. The incidents with boats and the related violence sadly testify to this. Today, some wish to turn Corsica into a territory where the law of the strongest prevails, characterized by delinquent behavior, monopolies, the tyranny of money, and greed.”
