Coach for Norway’s national wrestling team, Fritz Aanes, is highly critical of his own athletes in an interview with news. Several of Norway’s men’s athletes did not get it right during the WC in Belgrade last week. Large parts of the season have also been marked by poor results for a number of Norway’s wrestling profiles. A brutally honest Aanes believes that the athletes must take up their own mantle, and directs sharp criticism at his students. – It’s a terrible feeling training when you feel that you are sacrificing more than the athletes. Sometimes you have to take responsibility as a trainer, but not here. There is nothing wrong with the programme, it is wrong with the athletes, he says to news. The 26-year-old contracted an infection just before the EC, which meant that he could not compete. A knee injury also caused trouble in the build-up before the WC. The national team manager believes that injuries are part of the reason for the weak results. – Morten (Thoresen) has been struggling with a virus that we haven’t quite figured out yet, but there is no doubt that he has been carrying a virus in his body. Oskar was injured shortly before the WC, and Felix (Baldauf) is struggling with injuries and a few other things, says Aanes. As it has been this season, there has been poor dynamics and cohesion in the group. There has not been a winning culture. Marvik points out that it is not a “one-man show” and that you cannot do the job alone. – There has been a bit of a lack of that this year. It has been a tough season with many obstacles on the way. I hope that one can return to the same mentality and culture as it was during last year’s season, he says and adds that the season must be thoroughly evaluated. – Do you have confidence in Aanes as national team coach? – Yes, I have it. With the prerequisites that a plan is agreed upon that both have faith in. They have not had quite the same philosophy this year. That may have caused it to crack a little. The most important thing is to make a plan that both people think will work. That is the important thing – that you take care of the athletes and conversely – that you meet in the middle.
