Tragic Night Fire at Marienkrankenhaus in Hamburg Claims Three Lives
On a tragic night in Hamburg, a fire broke out at the Marienkrankenhaus located in the Hohenfelde district, resulting in the loss of three lives. The victims were three elderly men, aged 84, 85, and 87. This heart-wrenching incident was confirmed by the local police on Sunday. Moreover, the blaze left 34 individuals injured, with one person in critical condition. According to a spokesperson from the clinic, some staff members also required treatment in the emergency unit due to the flames.
The precise cause of the fire is still undetermined, but it erupted in a room on the geriatric ward, which is specifically designed for elderly patients. The State Criminal Police have initiated an investigation into the fire’s origin and circumstances; however, no immediate results were expected to be released on Sunday.
As the fire began on the ground floor, the flames rapidly spread through the facade to the first floor, filling the neurology ward with smoke. Firefighters were met with an alarming scene upon arrival, as patients were seen at the windows, crying out for assistance, as reported by Lorenz Hartmann, a spokesperson for the Hamburg fire department.
Emergency Response with 220 Personnel Deployed
The fire prompted immediate evacuation measures within parts of the hospital. A reporter from dpa on the scene noted that one room was entirely engulfed in flames, leaving the full extent of the property damage unclear initially. Patients were given treatment in the emergency unit, with only two individuals transferred to nearby hospitals. Details surrounding how many people were evacuated have yet to be confirmed; however, the clinic spokesperson indicated that the wards were at "normal" occupancy levels.
Firefighters received the alarm shortly after midnight and responded with a massive deployment of four fire engines, totaling 160 firefighters. In total, 220 emergency personnel were engaged in combating the blaze. Elderly patients were evacuated using wheelchairs and smoke hoods through the smoky hallways. Others were assisted with the help of a turntable ladder or portable ladders. Reports state that the fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes.
While the fire originated on the ground floor, firefighters had to scale about 2.5 meters through a window due to a trench in front of the basement that housed the lower-level windows.
Operative Rooms Remain Unscathed
Smoke caused by the fire infiltrated all four floors of the affected building, according to fire department officials. Some corridors were so densely filled with smoke that it was decided to keep some patients in their rooms to minimize the risk of smoke inhalation. Additionally, neighboring buildings were inspected for any impacted patients who had been housed there.
Technicians from the clinic worked alongside firefighters to determine whether patients could be safely returned to their respective wards. Thankfully, the operating rooms and an ENT department in the building were reported to be intact.
Eugen Brysch from the German Foundation for Patient Protection highlighted the necessity for a legal obligation to install independent extinguishing systems in all patient and staff rooms. He emphasized that often immobilized patients cannot escape dangerous situations without help, and that sleeping individuals might not even be aware of a fire until it’s too late.
Archdiocese Calls for Prayer
The Archbishop of Hamburg, Stefan Heße, has called upon the faithful for prayers for the victims of this tragic event. He expressed his profound shock and sadness in a statement, emphasizing that the thoughts and prayers of the community are with the deceased, the many injured, as well as their families and the hospital staff.
The Marienkrankenhaus is one of the largest confessional hospitals in Northern Germany, boasting approximately 600 beds and admitting around 93,000 patients annually. It falls under the auspices of the Ansgar Group, a nonprofit organization whose shareholders include the Archdiocese of Hamburg.
This devastating event serves not only as a reminder of the fragility of life, especially among vulnerable populations but also underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in healthcare facilities to protect both patients and staff.
