Enhanced Security Measures During Alès Feria
In recent weeks, Alès has been buzzing with energy as the annual feria season kicks off. Law enforcement agencies, including both police and gendarmerie, have significantly ramped up their presence around the city and its outskirts. Several comprehensive checks have been performed to ensure public safety and maintain law and order throughout this vibrant festival.
During a daily briefing held at the Cratère command post, Alès Sub-prefect Émile Soumbo emphasized the effective coordination among various services tasked with planning the feria. He remarked, “We’ve prepared the operational command post thoroughly, particularly concerning the closure of the bodegas at 2 a.m. This is typically when we face challenges.” It was noted that some crowds were reluctant to vacate areas such as Boulevard Louis-Blanc , highlighting the complexities of managing large gatherings.
Roughly 40,000 attendees enjoyed the festivities, yet thankfully, no significant incidents marred the evening. Any minor skirmishes were swiftly contained by the authorities, who conducted around 50 individual checks throughout the event. Two individuals were apprehended for carrying knives, showcasing the diligence of law enforcement in maintaining safety. Commissioner Emmanuel Dumas stated, “We have reinforcements from all over the south of France. We will continue to intensify these types of controls as the feria progresses.”
Two Bodegas Sanctioned for Non-compliance
A key point of discussion during these operations was the enforcement actions taken against two bodegas. According to Marian Mirabello , the director of the cabinet and responsible for city security, 60 kg of food were found to be non-compliant according to the regulations set by the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations (DDPP, formerly veterinary services) and were subsequently destroyed. Mirabello noted, “These two bodegas will no longer be able to cook food and will be limited to serving drinks only.” Such measures underline the commitment to food safety and public health regulations.
The Red Cross played a crucial role during the event as well, performing around 30 health interventions which included eight evacuations to the Alès hospital. This aspect of the operation underscores that while the festivities are a time of joy, they also bring the potential for medical emergencies, necessitating prompt response from health services.
Beyond the city limits, the gendarmes in the Alès company conducted a robust series of checks, totaling 120 outside the city. This proactive approach resulted in nine instances of drunk driving , as well as one case of driving under the influence of narcotics. One driver’s license was confiscated, and a vehicle was impounded, a stark reminder of the risks associated with consuming alcohol during major public events.
