A hiking group of 17 individuals, including a man named Adil Bartu, set out to explore the stunning landscapes near the Gürleyik Waterfall. What was intended to be a peaceful day in nature turned into a desperate search when Bartu went missing.

Missing in the Wilderness

As the group traversed the rugged terrain, their cheerful adventures took a serious turn when Bartu apparently wandered off and lost his way. The remaining group members quickly realized something was amiss and promptly alerted the authorities. ### Their swift action led to the initiation of a large-scale search operation to locate Bartu.

The Search Operation

The urgency of the situation brought together an impressive 120-member search team comprising personnel from multiple organizations. These included the Çanakkale Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the Gendarmerie, AKUT, UMKE, and volunteers from neighboring towns and villages. Expert tracking dogs, advanced drones, and specialized search teams were deployed to the area, which is known for its challenging terrain.

The search efforts were not only marked by a robust presence of rescuers but also by a palpable sense of community, as locals joined in the quest to find Bartu. The efforts were remarkable and demonstrated the commitment of both official teams and civilians to assist in finding the missing individual.

Unfortunately, the search did not end with the desired outcome. On May 26, at exactly 19:34, the lifeless body of Adil Bartu was found near the Gürleyik Waterfall. Amidst the grief and sorrow, the rescuers faced the complicated task of retrieving the body from the rugged natural setting. The challenging conditions delayed the extraction process, but investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident soon got underway.

Rescuers from various teams worked tirelessly to navigate the hurdles presented by the landscape. The coordinated efforts involved moving Bartu’s body first on foot and later utilizing a tractor trailer for the final leg of the journey.

After six grueling hours, Bartu’s remains were transported to Adatepebaşı village, where an ambulance was waiting to transfer him to the Ayvacık State Hospital morgue. The extended recovery ordeal underscored the sometimes treacherous conditions that can be encountered in nature, echoing the importance of safety and preparation for outdoor activities.

Reflections on Safety in Outdoor Activities

The tragic death of Adil Bartu serves as a stark reminder for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Engaging in outdoor activities, while enriching and thrilling, also comes with inherent risks. It is essential for individuals to remain vigilant, equipped with maps, compasses, and communication devices, especially in remote areas.
