Barcelona’s Roller Hockey Season: A Difficult Journey

Despite the  title of the league still being in play , the Barcelona roller hockey team’s season has not met expectations. With only the  Supercopa de España  to showcase, the team experienced shocking defeats in both the  Copa del Rey  and in  European competitions . Moreover, they had to rely on penalties to progress against Alcoi in the first match of the  Playoffs . This has raised questions about the team’s efficiency and strategy.

A Shift in Leadership: Who’s Next?

Following the struggles of the current season, indications suggest there will be a  change in team management . According to reports from  Info Hockey , the current coach of Porto,  Ricardo Ares , has been tapped as the leading candidate to take over the coaching responsibilities at Barcelona for the upcoming season. However, it is important to note that Ares is under contract with Porto until 2027, making this transition potentially complicated.

This shift would see the departure of David Cáceres , who was a personal choice of Gaby Cairo, the coordinator of Barcelona’s roller hockey program. Cáceres took over as head coach last summer after the exit of Edu Castro and many key players from the roster. Although he signed through 2026, the team’s inability to achieve its set objectives may lead to his dismissal.

Achievements and Qualifications: Why Ricardo Ares?

Should Barcelona make this coaching change, they would be acquiring one of the most prominent figures in roller hockey coaching in recent years.  Ricardo Ares, aged 49, joined Porto in the 2021/22 season  after a successful stint as coach of both the men’s and women’s national teams in Spain.

Throughout his coaching career,  Ares has amassed an impressive collection of accolades . He has led his teams to two  Women’s World Cups , a  Women’s European Championship , two  Placard Championships , a  WSE Continental Cup , and a  Champions League  victory. This remarkable track record situates him as a competent leader who can spearhead a project aiming to dominate European roller hockey.

Focus on the OK League Title

Before future coaching decisions can materialize, Barcelona must concentrate on competing deeply into the  Playoffs  to secure the  OK League title . Currently in the quarter-finals, the team faces an important match on  Sunday at 12:00 PM , where a victory against PAS Alcoi would ensure their progression to the semifinals.

If they fail to clinch the win in Alicante, a decisive  third match  will take place on the upcoming  Tuesday at 8:30 PM  in the  Palau Blaugrana . Should the Catalan team surpass this quarter-final stage, they will face the winner of the matchup between  Igualada Rigat  and  Calafell  in the semi-finals.

The Future: Building Back to Glory

The team is looking to regroup and regain its former glory. The next few weeks will be pivotal, not only for the current roster aiming for the league title but also for evaluating potential new leaders, whether from within the team or from outside. The goal for Barcelona roller hockey is clear:  return to the summit of both Spanish and European competitions .

The impact of a coach like Ricardo Ares would not just be felt on the field but also in the locker room, motivating players to perform at their peak level. A change in coaching can often reinvigorate a squad, allowing them to push through challenges and unite under a renewed sense of purpose.

This season has undoubtedly been a test for Barcelona, yet how they respond in the face of adversity may define their trajectory not just for this year, but for several years to come. The undeniable focus will remain on executing a successful playoff campaign while contemplating potential shifts in management.

As Barcelona aims to navigate the complexities of the current season while laying the groundwork for its future, the roller hockey community will undoubtedly keep a close watch, eager to see how this storied club will adapt and grow from these challenges. With  talented players , a rich history, and possible new leadership, the potential for resurgence remains vibrant in the air, promising thrilling developments in the roller hockey landscape.
