Unraveling the Methamphetamine Network in France

On May 24, 2024, the  Marseille prosecutor’s office  made headlines by announcing the dismantling of an international  synthetic drug manufacturing network . This operation, spearheaded primarily in the Var region of France, led to the  arrest of fifteen individuals . These arrests were part of a larger strategy to combat organized crime, and eight of the apprehended were subsequently indicted.

The operation was launched after  months of thorough investigations  orchestrated under the supervision of interregional judicial authorities. This initiative was initiated following the June 2024 arrest of two individuals in the Var region, who were caught with  215 kilos of methamphetamine —a seizure that the prosecutor,  Nicolas Bessone , described as “exceptional.” He pointed out that this quantity aligns almost perfectly with the annual seizures made in France over recent years, indicating a significant issue with drug trafficking in the area.

Upon further investigation, it became apparent that a staggering  400 kilos of methamphetamine  had been produced earlier that spring in a clandestine laboratory set up in a  luxurious property  in Var’s hinterland. Prosecutor Bessone emphasized that the raw materials for these drugs were primarily sourced from  China  and were transported by sea and road to local businesses in Var. These companies served as solid logistical hubs for the drug network, which projected a retail turnover of more than  11 million euros  with an initial investment estimated at around  150,000 euros .

The two individuals apprehended in June were reportedly linked to  organized crime in Var  and had connections to a  Mexican drug cartel . Their involvement highlighted the expansive nature of the trafficking operation, which had roots in various  European countries , including Spain and Belgium. Investigators also uncovered the  use of cryptocurrencies  for financial transactions, demonstrating how tech-savvy these organizations have become in evading law enforcement.

Large-Scale Operation Leading to Significant Arrests

The latest judicial operation culminated in the arrest of  fifteen individuals , primarily in Var, but one of the key figures in the network was apprehended in  Belgium  by the local judicial police, acting in accordance with a request for mutual assistance. This large-scale operation mobilized  190 officers  from various sections of the Marseille gendarmerie and additional support from surrounding regions including  Versailles, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence , and even the maritime gendarmerie.

Extensive search operations conducted during this initiative resulted in the seizure of various assets, including three vehicles, luxury goods, numerous mobile devices, and electronic apparatuses utilized for evading police surveillance. Investigators also discovered abandoned materials at the Villa in Var’s hinterland, which served as the site for the illegal  methamphetamine production  laboratory.

Following the interrogations,  eight out of the fifteen arrested individuals  faced charges for the import, production, and trafficking of narcotic substances as part of an organized group. Additionally, multiple counts of  money laundering  were also brought against them. Of these, six were placed under  pre-trial detention  while two were released under judicial supervision.
