At the UN, Paris and Riyadh Ask for “Acts” Towards the Two-State Solution

In a significant diplomatic move,  Saudi Arabia  and  France  are set to preside over an international conference on the  Palestinian issue  in June. During a decisive meeting at the  United Nations , both nations emphasized the urgent need for “ Acts ” that would concretely implement a  “plan”  towards achieving a two-state solution involving both  Israeli  and  Palestinian  states.

The backdrop of this conference is underscored by the ongoing  war in Gaza  and the  escalation of colonization in the West Bank . Anne-Claire Legendre, a Middle East advisor to French President  Emmanuel Macron , stated that there is an  urgent necessity  to elevate the search for a  political solution  to the forefront of international dialogue. This meeting is scheduled for June 17 to 20, a time during which critical discussions will take place.

Legendre expressed that “the  June conference  must constitute a  decisive  and  transformative step  towards effective implementation of the two-state solution.” She emphasized the importance of moving from  words to actions , signaling that the resolution of the current conflict in Gaza is connected to the broader  Israeli-Palestinian  conflict.

To build a “ robust and credible framework  for the future,” Legendre pointed out the essential need to  disarm and dismiss Hamas . This claim raises questions about the role of militant groups in the ongoing conflict and emphasizes the importance of establishing a  secure  environment for negotiations.

The anticipated outcomes of the conference, convened by the  UN General Assembly , must extend beyond mere declarations. According to  Manal Radwan , an advisor to the  Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs , the results must be a genuine  “plan for action.”  She articulated that true peace in the region “ starts with the recognition of Palestine ,” highlighting the need for international endorsement and acknowledgment of  Palestinian statehood .

The conference aims to stimulate new recognitions of the State of  Palestine , which has already been recognized by nearly  150 countries . This recognition could be pivotal in reshaping the diplomatic landscape in the  Middle East  and affording  Palestinians  greater agency on the global stage.

“The  path we want to carve out is clear; it is that of  mutual recognition ,” insisted Legendre during the discussions. This statement reiterates the significance of reciprocal acknowledgment between Israel and Palestine, which is vital for establishing a  lasting peace .

The  two-state solution  has long been seen as the path towards sustainability and peace in the region, but the complexities of ongoing  conflicts ,  colonization , and radical factions make it incredibly challenging. The upcoming conference represents a moment of potential transformation, establishing framework agreements that can lead to legislative measures, economic cooperation, and thoughtful dialogues on  security .

Discourse surrounding the geopolitical dynamics of the  Middle East  showcases ongoing tensions but also holds the potential for transformative peace processes. The participation of nations like  Saudi Arabia  and  France , along with the  United Nations , symbolizes a collective effort to foster diplomacy where it is rarely found.

Moving forward, the success of this conference will hinge on the  commitment  from all parties involved. The proposals for  recognition ,  security , and  cooperation  must not merely encapsulate lofty ideals but manifest tangible policies designed to ensure a  safe ,  stable , and  prosperous  future for both Israelis and Palestinians.
