Algerian director Mohamed Lakhdar-Hamina, Palme d’Or winner in 1975, has died.

Algerian director and producer  Mohamed Lakhdar Hamina , the only  Arab  and  African filmmaker  crowned in  Cannes , died on Friday, May 23 at the age of  95 , his family announced. He died at his home in  Algiers , said his children.

He is one of the few  African  and  Arab directors  to have contributed four times to the  Cannes Film Festival , winning two major distinctions: the prize for the first work for  The Aurès Wind , in 1967, and the prestigious  Palm d’Or  for  Chronicle of the Years of Embers , in 1975. He remained the last living laureate of the  Palme d’Or .

A tribute was paid to him during the  Cannes Festival  by projecting the  4K work version  of his film  Chronicle of the Years of Embers  as part of the  Cannes Classic  program.

Self-Taught Filmmaker

Chronicle of the Years of Embers permanently established this  self-taught  filmmaker as a  world-renowned director . The struggle for the  independence of Algeria  is at the heart of this monumental historical fresco, portraying the journey of the Algerian people and their struggle against  French colonization  and the war of independence from 1954 to 1962.

Born on  February 26, 1934 , in  M’Sila  in the  Aurès , Mohamed Lakhdar-Hamina was raised in a family of modest peasants in the highlands. Following a school of  agriculture , he studied in  France , specifically in  Antibes , where he met his wife, with whom he had four sons.

During the  Algerian War , his father was captured, tortured, and killed by the  French army . In 1958, he himself joined the  Algerian resistance  in  Tunis .

His passion for  cinema  was self-taught, developed through an internship with  Tunisian news outlets  before he embarked on making his first  short films .
