The American president,  Donald Trump , and his South African counterpart,  Cyril Ramaphosa , agreed during their discussions in Washington on Wednesday, May 21, to strengthen  bilateral trade  and  investment , announced the South African presidency on Thursday.

The two leaders have agreed to strengthen  bilateral trade links , to increase  investments  for mutual benefit, and to forge  collaboration  in  technological exchanges . This was stated in a press release from Pretoria, which regards Mr. Ramaphosa’s visit to the United States as a success.

Commercial Negotiations Ahead

President Ramaphosa indicated that the upcoming opening of  commercial negotiations  between South Africa and the United States will involve their respective negotiation teams. A substantial emphasis was placed on the necessity of cementing a robust trading relationship.

The interview at the White House had been preceded by a tense meeting, during which Mr. Trump presented a video claiming to prove that  genocide  is occurring against whites in South Africa. This video, full of inaccuracies, was intended to support Mr. Trump’s offer of  refugee status  to white farmers, which angered the South African government.

The bilateral relationship between the two nations has deteriorated since Donald Trump took office. He previously threatened South Africa by suggesting high customs duties would be imposed and expelled their ambassador.

Mr. Ramaphosa was accompanied by four ministers, including John Steenhuisen, Minister of Agriculture and Head of the Democratic Alliance. This reflects the importance of agriculture within the  South African economy .

Maintaining strong trade links with the United States is a top priority for Mr. Ramaphosa. The U.S. stands as South Africa’s second-largest trading partner, following  China . This relationship is vital for the development of both nations, especially in terms of economic collaboration.
