Under the watchful eyes of North Korean leader **Kim Jong-un**, a **serious accident** occurred during the launch ceremony of a **5,000-ton destroyer** in the port city of **Chongjin**, reported the state-run news agency **KCNA** on May 21.
Kim Jong-un was present throughout the event and described the accident as a **”criminal act caused by absolute negligence.”** He emphasized that such negligence **”could not be tolerated.”**
The **agency** reported that **”certain sections of the bottom of the warship have been crushed,”** leading to the ship being out of **balance**.
He indicated that those responsible for the **”irresponsible errors”** would face consequences during a meeting of the **central party committee** scheduled for next month.
A Destroyer Unveiled in April
The name of the **destroyer** involved in the incident was not disclosed at the time. However, just last month, North Korea had showcased a **5,000-ton destroyer** named **Choe Hyon.** During that unveiling, state media published images of Kim and his daughter **Ju Ae**, who many analysts speculate may be positioned to succeed him.
North Korea claimed that this **ship** was equipped with **the most powerful weapons**, and it was projected to **enter service** in early the following year. Analysts suggest that the **Choe Hyon** may potentially be fitted with **short-range tactical nuclear missiles**, though it remains unproven whether North Korea can effectively miniaturize its nuclear arsenal.
