It could have gone really badly when the veteran train passed the level crossing at Lone i Arna in Bergen on Sunday afternoon. A video shows that the car ignores flashing red lights and drives over just before the train passes. A man who was standing nearby, he says, instinctively pushed the son away, to avoid parts from a collision hitting them. – I was sure there was a crash, says the man, who wishes to remain anonymous. Several cases of risky driving – Another fool who gets away, I thought when I heard about the incident at Lone, says Ivar Gubberud. He is the operations manager of the Museum Gamle Vossebanen, which runs vintage trains on the Garnes–Midttun section in Bergen. – It is reprehensible. It is a punishable and irresponsible act, which can have major consequences, he says. This is not the first time motorists take chances near trains they operate. In June, a car was hit by the train at a tunnel in Erdalsvegen. The driver is suspected of not obeying the right of way. – The case has been fully investigated, and a prosecution decision is expected within a couple of weeks, says deputy police officer Øystein Horn in the West police district. – Motorists give up the tailgate According to Ivar Gubberud, there have been several near-collisions on the stretch on which veteran trains run this summer. – I am not surprised. My impression is that many motorists give a lift. It is knowingly risky driving, which it should have been in society’s interest to weed out. He says all cases are reported to the police. Now he is asking people to report if they have information about the driver of the car on Lone on Sunday.
