ECAM Forum: The New Hub for International Co-Productions

ECAM Forum has emerged as a cutting-edge international co-production market, set to take place from June 10 to June 13 at the iconic Matadero in Madrid. The event, organized by the prestigious ECAM Film School, aims to foster collaborations and showcase emerging talent within the film industry.

Significant Launch at Cannes

During its launch at the Spanish Pavilion in Cannes, prominent figures such as ICAA head Ignasi Camós, along with representatives from the Community of Madrid and Madrid City Council, underscored the importance of this initiative. Their commitment serves as a testament to the event’s potential in the film sector.

Achievements from Previous Edition

After a successful inaugural year, which successfully launched various films that subsequently premiered at A-Festivals such as Locarno, Rotterdam, and Toronto, the upcoming 2025 program boasts fresh cinematic gems. The Films to Come (for projects in development) and Last Push (for films in post-production) categories now incorporate international selections, enhancing their appeal.

ECAM Forum coordinator Alberto Valverde emphasized the dual goal of promoting Spanish cinema on the global stage while attracting foreign talent. "By showcasing a blend of international and Spanish projects, we believe we can elevate their visibility,” he stated.

Increased Submissions and Quality Curations

This year witnessed an impressive surge, with 267 international feature projects submitted—more than doubling last year’s entries. An A-list panel of industry professionals meticulously curated these projects, which will be presented to over 300 professionals.

The selection process was managed by a committed Films to Come selection committee comprising distinguished producers such as Zsuzsanna Kiraly from Switzerland, Agustina Chiarino from Uruguay, and Carla Sospedra from Spain.

Gender Representation and Noteworthy Projects

Out of 202 submissions, 15 projects were selected. Notably, all these selected projects are directed by women, a fact highlighted by Valverde promoting gender equality in cinema. Among the most promising titles are “A Decorous Woman” featuring Chilean star Catalina Saavedra and Francisca Alegría’s “Nacimiento.”

This year, the Last Push selection committee boasts a diverse mix of programmers, including Gaia Furrer from the Venice Days and Violeta Bava from renowned film festivals around the globe.

Diverse Genres and Themes

The Last Push category flaunts a rich tapestry of narratives, showcasing films from various genres, including documentaries and classic fiction works. This season’s selection displays an eclectic mix of comedic, dramatic, and genre-defying storytelling approaches. Valverde expressed excitement at the attention the selected projects have garnered, citing a distinct commitment to innovation and risk-taking in film.

In addition to these programs, a new lineup of short films from France, Greece, Czech Republic, Chile, and Colombia has been added, opening avenues for even greater international collaboration.

Masterclass by Bertrand Bonello

Days before the event’s commencement, acclaimed French filmmaker Bertrand Bonello will deliver a masterclass on June 12, partnering with Cineteca Madrid and the Filmadrid Festival. This offers participants a chance to gain insights on navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the film industry.

The Path Ahead

Further details about the long-awaited program, including information about series development, are expected closer to the commencement of the ECAM Forum. With last year’s edition attracting over 300 attendees, including top-tier sales outfits and festival programmers, expectations are set high for another record event.

Undoubtedly, ECAM Forum is poised to become the leading marketplace for international co-productions, fortifying Madrid’s role as a central hub in the global film industry. The extra emphasis on female directors is a step towards inclusivity, ensuring a diverse range of storytelling is both celebrated and supported. As the excitement builds, the industry watches in anticipation for a showcase that promises to captivate audiences worldwide.
