It is 7 am, the morning logo appears on the phone with this message: “We prepare your edition. »» Then the pile of multicolored “cards” – one per article – unfolds and displays the opening subject. Then, it is up to the reader to play: Him to keep or pass the article – like on Tinder! This little addictive ritual was born ten years ago, on May 11, 2015, with the very first edition of the morning of the world. Since then, 3,571 editions have been published (May 11, 2025) and they receive two million visits per month.

The promise: offer a selection of twenty articles from 7 am, like a small newspaper, complementary to the main application of World which follows the news in real time. Thanks to the morning, all our readers have access to the essentials of the information of the night and the day to come; to the main decrypts, reports and analysis of the World ; as well as lighter “side” to escape. In ten years, more than 75,000 articles have been selected according to this alchemy.

The publication at 7 am is the fruit of a process started twenty-four hours earlier, mobilizing a dozen journalists spread between the editorial staff of Paris and our Los Angeles office, California.

In the morning: One or a journalist from the Parisian team begins to prepare for the next day’s edition. Some articles that have completed their “copy circuit” (each of them, at Worldis at least reread by a service chef as well as by journalists from the publishing and then correction; Some, more sensitive, receive several hierarchical proofreads) have already been selected for the morning. The work of the team then consists of a new rereading, then in the development of a specific titles – the titles of the morning are often shorter due to the format of the cards and space constraints on the screen of a mobile phone.

The morning journalists also manage the production of several formats published in priority for the edition:

  • The “Letters of” :: From Monday to Friday, a correspondent for World sheds light on one aspect of the country of the country in which it resides – or another located in its coverage area.
  • The list of the morning :: This daily meeting closes the edition and aims to give advice and recommendations. Some lists are weekly (the series of the week, the films on display, the selection of books, albums and music festivals), others come back to another frequency (selections of documentary, podcasts, comics, children’s books, exhibitions, shows, travel and gardens, video games, etc.).
  • Sex according to Maïa :: Each first Sunday of the month, journalist Maïa Mazaurette analyzes in her chronicle our representations of the body, our sexual practices and our erotic imaginations.

Noon : This is the time for the daily editorial conference, which brings together representatives of each service of the newspaper around the editorial department. We paint the main topical subjects and articles, videos and lives that will be published in the next twenty-four hours. La Matinale announces its editorial production there and begins to target the subjects that will constitute the next day’s edition.

In the afternoon: The selection is gradually expanded and evolves according to news and the vagaries specific to certain “papers” – such a report announced at noon will finally take more time and will be published later, such a “cold” article is offset due to a warmer news, etc. Often, the opening subject is already taking shape at that time, except striking news in the night.

The next day’s edition becomes more concrete. The morning journalists ensure multiple balances:

  • “hot” news items (most of the time in the gauge recognizable by its blue color, which mixes photo, title and “chapô”);
  • surveys and decrypts (red -colored size, without photo), in the form of texts or videos;
  • Reports, portraits or large interactive formats, highlighted in a pink size giving pride of place to the photo or illustration;
  • Opinion articles (stands – “points of view” written by personalities outside the editorial staff – or analyzes and chronicles – by journalists of the World), materialized in purple and by a title quote;

  • Lighter articles, whether culture, travel, gastronomy, intimacy … The morning team sets itself the aim of devoting a third of its editions to these lighter subjects so as not to give way to “serious” news. Let’s face it, the objective is not always easy to hold, because multiple news is essential or because lighter production is lower on certain days, but the challenge is there!

This preselection is refined during a “Tour des Services” at the end of the afternoon. This is an opportunity, between the journalist of the morning which prepares the edition of the next day and the service of permanence service that day, to take stock of the articles launched and on the planned rendering.

In the evening: The main difficulty of morning journalists is… to choose. So many good articles and important subjects can be selected from the hundred products every day by writing! But the promise of the morning is to provide a selection of twenty content (including the list of the morning).

Most of the articles retained are imposed by themselves, essential by the subject or by their format (surveys, reports …), but there is generally a “gray zone” where the subjectivity of our journalists intervenes. So always comes, at the end of the day, the moment when you have to rule out subjects, often reluctantly, even if we sometimes provide a slightly more extensive selection (especially for special editions during major current events).

The

During the night: From 11 p.m., the office of World Installed in Los Angeles, which has about twenty journalists in total, takes over from Paris. He is responsible for receiving the latest hot news articles, sent by editors and editors in the evening or in the middle of the night. The “paper” is then reread and edited and it will complete the morning.

It is the Los Angeles team that brings the final touch to the edition that will be consulted by readers: the opening subject, which must be strong and in the news, iconography (photos and illustrations visible in “cards”) and the order of appearance of articles. The latter, necessarily subjective, responds to a subtle equation between multiple factors: trying both to give priority to the most important information, not to confine “light” subjects only at the end to lighten the first part, to vary the colors of “cards” or not to chain several too similar photos. Not always easy!

After a rereading of the titles and “chapôs” of the “cards” by correctors working in Paris from 6:30 am then, at 7 am, the time to press the button “Export in public”which delivers the editing on the 430,000 phones and tablets on which the application is installed. The notification “The edition [du jour] is available ” appears on the screen of those who wish to be warned of it. In Paris, a journalist from the morning team connects to bring a new eye and possibly send the edition in the event of a problem. Coffee or tea, then comes the time to start preparing the next day edition.
