By pressing a button you get access to the rest of Norway and to the world. You hear other people and end up in good company. You may hear thoughts and perspectives that are similar to your own, or you hear from someone who sees the world in a completely different way. You are told that you are not alone, that we live in a troubled time and that more people know the same. One of the nicest things about radio is that we are linked to voice and breath, laughter and dialogue. High support every day hears 2.8 million Norwegians nationwide radio. Local radio collects more than 700,000 listeners weekly. Radio has in a remarkable way kept its position throughout the period when the Internet grew and we got digital media. On April 29, 1925, the private broadcasting company A/S received a license to run radio in Norway. With a broadcast station in the Telegraph building in the center of Oslo, they could start regular broadcasts. In 1933, news was founded and the offer to the public was expanded. The fact that we have been able to listen to radio for a hundred years does not mean that the medium has stood still. Norway has changed, Norwegians have gained new habits and new needs. An example is the Saturday children’s lesson, which was first sent in 1924 and eventually became a tradition at news. For many post -war children, “The Children’s Hour for the Little” eventually became a daily highlight. The first broadcast was in 1947, and some of our most famous voices belonged here, such as Alf Prøysen, Thorbjørn Egner and Anne-Cath. Vestly. Renew and preserve, but in the 2000s, the support for the child lesson began to shrink. The kids had their own TV channels, computer games and eventually tablets to concentrate on. Getting them to sit down at the radio at a special time, and maybe hear a story that went on for several weeks, was no longer possible. Around 2010, we actually found out that those who listened to the children’s lesson had an average age of over 60 years. Then it was time to close down and create new offers for the youngest listeners. Public broadcasting is often about finding the balance between renewing and preserving. We must regularly take some brave steps, to be relevant to listeners tomorrow. Secure Norwegian content We who run the Norwegian sound media have a job to do to defend the Norwegian content, together with the politicians who determine the framework conditions. Now that radio has moved from broadcast to streaming, technology giants have come in. They control and challenge distribution, presentation, editorial freedom and business models for important Norwegian radio channels. How do we ensure that international gatekeepers close Norwegian sound media from Norwegians’ ears? Today, they have the opportunity to do this by taking full control over who is passing through on the smartphones and in our cars. news and the other Norwegian sound media have coincidental interests in this important question. Therefore, a total radio industry, consisting of the Bauer Media, the P4 group, news and the Norwegian Local Radio Association has initiated a dialogue with the authorities. We will work together to ensure that the Norwegian people have access to quality content of sound from Norwegian players in the future as well. Try the app! Today, news collects the entire diversity of sound content in our news Radio app. There are content for children, news and social material, documentaries and cultural material. Also, the radio service is included, it is as old as the radio itself and could celebrate its 100 years in January with anniversary worship at Søm church. We believe that selectable sound is the future of the radio. At news Radio, we combine the opportunity to listen to all the live-broad channels, and at the same time provide an entrance gate to an adventurous and rich world of different news content. Here you can find what you want, whenever you want. In news, we like to say that “we belong together”, and fortunately the community does not disappear with the transition to streaming. Hearing sound here and now, along with others, has an important and vibrant future also in a digital media world. Our ambition is that we will continue to belong together for at least another 100 years. Happy birthday! Published 29.04.2025, at. 15.55
