Amazon Prime has turned up the adventure feeling several notches when the fantasy series “The Wheel of Time” is now back. Larger, better and more spectacular are keywords for the third season of the adventure, based on Robert Jordan’s boxing series of the same name. And there is no doubt – this is the best season in the series so far. With a worldwide story where our heroes explore everything from magnificent natural areas to dirty, pre -filled inns, world construction is more beautiful and more alive than ever. It is a joy to be back in the universe, but still not everything it should be when Jordan’s colossal narrative is to be pressed into the TV route. Sword Master: Rand (Josha Stradowski) and LAN (Daniel Hennesy) train on the sword art in season three of “The Wheel of Time”. Photo: Courtesy of Prime As in the previous seasons, there is still a repetitive problem that action threads are not built up well enough until they carry the characters. I also have the impression that Amazon’s producers are losing with unnecessary genre clichés for fear that viewers who have not read the books will fall off. Here I think they underestimate their audience. The third season of “The Wheel of Time” is therefore full of both ups and downs. The peaks have never been higher, but the book fan will still tear himself in the hair in frustration of some of the changes made from book to screen – at least I did! Posting new adventures It has been a month since the events last season when we meet our friends again. Now Egwene, Nynaeve, Elayne, Rand, Food and Perrin are gathered in Tak Valon, under Moiraine Sedais vigilant eyes, before being spread again for all winds. Hot friendship: Elayne (Ceara Coveney) and Aviendha (Ayoola Smart) find the tone of “The Wheel of Time”, Season 3. Perrin wants to return to The Two Rivers, while Rand and Egwene set course east to the Aielian Ødeland. There, Rand will try to recruit an army that can help him, the reborn dragon, to fulfill the prophecies he must enforce to fight the darkness. The gang also has its inner demons to contend with, while at the same time the powers of evil are looking for them all. Engaging and frustrating world construction is one of the series’ strongest cards – the universe in “The Wheel of Time” breathes and lives. Different cultures: We visit several new places in season three of “The Wheel of Time”. Here is my (Kae Alexander) and food (Dónal Finn) and Elayne (Ceara Coveney) on new adventures. Photo: Courtesy of Prime where in the first two seasons we often skipped the actual journey to different destinations, this time we are allowed to join travel over the sea and land. It stimulates the explorer and reinforces the feeling of being on adventure. The exploration of different cultures is a big part of the core of Robert Jordan’s writing. , When done well, it’s really fun to see it being brought to life in the TV route. Season 3 of “The Wheel of Time” is mostly based on/inspired by “The Shadow Rising” (1992) and “The Fires of Heaven” (1993), book numbers 4 and 5 in Jordan’s series. To the wilderness: Rand and co travel to “The Aiel Waste” in Season 3 of “The Wheel of Time”. Photo: Courtesy of Prime These are the books where the author seriously began to challenge established fantasy tropes and began to pave the way for what fantasy could be. Therefore, it becomes extra frustrating when it is experienced as if the TV series is doing the opposite. For example, when the complex Aiel culture, where the various clans are an important role, is simplified to “the kind and the bad”. And, of course, the bad ones wear black clothes, even though it makes zero meaning for a people who specialize in hiding in and going into one with the desert landscape. Taking my breath away black clothes on slims may sound like little bit, but it is the amount of little bit that together becomes a great frustration element. Then it is good that the highlights of the season are still many, and not least so raw that they take their breath away. Powerful magic: Siuan Sanchie Okonedo (Sophie Okonedo) fights a fierce fight against darkness in The White Tower in Season 3 of “The Wheel of Time”. Photo: Courtesy of Prime The magic elements of the series look more powerful than ever, the emotional climaxes are both goose and tear-free, while the series also has a wonderful glimpse in the eye when it entertainingly leans into the corny side of the universe. With Norwegian eyes it is also fun to see Synnøve Macody Lund in a smaller, yet central supporting role that makes its mark. The series creators have managed to create an adventure that engages both good and bad, and the season will probably both entertain and frustrate the fans.
