A domino effect of its new relations with the American administration, Mexico adopted a new reform of its constitution, Tuesday, March 11, making it possible to protect its national sovereignty and to sanction foreign interference.

By 417 votes for and 36 against, the Chamber of Deputies largely adopted the constitutional initiative announced by the leftist president, Claudia Sheinbaum on February 20, after the announcement of her American counterpart, Donald Trump, to place six Mexican cartels on a list of organizations “Terrorists”. Mexico will not accept any “Invasion” American under the pretext of fighting drug trafficking, then warned the head of the State.

“Mexico, under no circumstances, will interventions, intervention or any other act from abroad which would undermine the integrity, independence and sovereignty of the nation”said the text adopted. “The most severe penalty as possible” and a “Preventive detention” will be applied to any stranger carrying out spying activities without the government’s approval as part of collaboration agreements.

Cooperation gesture

The reform, which modifies two articles of the Constitution, had already been approved by the Senate on February 26. The text must now be approved by the Congress of 17 of the country’s 32 states.

Drug trafficking, in particular mortal fentanyl, to American territory is Donald Trump’s main argument to threaten Mexico and Canada to tax their imports to 25 %, despite the free trade agreement in North America. The Republican President has twice postponed these sanctions, although he insisted on their entry into force from April 2.

President Sheinbaum claims to have confidence that this threat will not be carried out towards Mexico. On February 28, in a gesture of cooperation, the Mexican government delivered to the United States 29 alleged drug cartels, including Rafael Caro Quintero, wanted for the murder of a DEA agent.
