Jérémie Papin, Guillaume Cartier, Ivan Espinosa … before the start of a crucial board of directors for Nissan, Tuesday March 11 at the end of the day in Tokyo, three names – two French, a Mexican – were mentioned by the Japanese press to take over from Makoto Uchida, the current CEO, and among them, no Japanese. It is a sign of the depth of the crisis that shakes Renault’s former partner in the Alliance.
At the end of the conclave, it was ultimately the Mexican Ivan Espinosa, responsible for planning and therefore the launch of the products, which was chosen to take the direction of Nissan, from 1er april.
The new leader has a double challenge before him. Conduct the restructuring plan announced in October 2024, aimed at reducing the production capacity of Nissan by 20 %, with 9,000 job cuts. And resume discussions for a takeover by its competitor Honda to form the fourth world group. These were interrupted on February 13, but, a few days later, the Financial Times announced that Toshihiro Mibe, the director general of Honda, was ready to reopen them after the departure of Makoto Uchida.
