Advent and Christmas are a time for traditions. This is also the case for the Air Force. For years, fighter jets have taken off from the bases and flown in formation all over Norway to show that it is almost Christmas. But unlike Santa Claus, the fighter pilots are a little more dependent on the weather to arrive. – Such formation flights in particular depend on the weather. So the one that goes out from Ørland has unfortunately been canceled due to the weather conditions, says Major Stian Roen in the Air Force. – There are many considerations to take into account when flying in formation. The plan was for several F-35 fighters to take over from the combat air base in Ørland and fly in formation from Kragerø and north to Trondheim before landing again at the combat air base. – We have already flown a poinsettia formation together with the Saab Gripen this year. So we have already flown, but not with our own. But that’s the way it is, says Roen. The formation flight before Christmas can be a great spectacle in good weather. Three F-35 fighter jets will take off from Evenes this morning and up to eight Saab Safari planes from Bardufoss.
