The man in his 50s who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in one of the biggest online abuse cases in Norwegian history is appealing the sentence. The northerner was convicted in the Salten District Court at the end of November for 215 cases of sexual abuse against children as young as six. The man, who has pleaded guilty, is appealing the sentence, among other things. In addition to the prison sentence, he was ordered to pay NOK 28 million in compensation to the victims. The legal aid attorney for the over 200 children, Charlotte Ringkjøb (pictured), tells news that they are taking the appeal into account. – My clients had hoped that he would not appeal, and that he could settle down with the district court’s verdict. Sol Elden is the man’s defender together with Maren Larsen Borgan. They tell news that their client was mainly convicted for the matters he himself has acknowledged, and acquitted of other matters. – There are still some conditions for which he has been convicted for which we believe there is no evidentiary coverage. It is about unidentified victims where, given that they are unidentified, it is not possible to determine their age. – The appeal is further directed at a problem of the application of the law, and in addition we believe that the sentencing does not sufficiently take into account the fact that he has cooperated and acknowledged most of the circumstances. Therefore, my client has chosen to appeal the judgment both in terms of the application of the law, assessment of evidence and sentencing.
