As a rule, it is the physiotherapist’s task to repair the athletes. But sometimes they also need some treatment themselves. Because when Kristian Brynestad sprained his back on a trip, Kajsa Vickhoff Lie came to the rescue. – Kajsa probably wants it to be that I’m broken-legged, but then she’s only going to lie. It is important to point out, he says, laughing. And he is right – because the 26-year-old fires back humorously. – I did exactly as he said. Then I had a physiotherapist who simply cannot stand physiotherapy, says Vickhoff Lie to news. HELPER: Vickhoff Lie offered to help when the physiotherapist struggled with his back. On Saturday and Sunday, Kajsa Vickhoff Lie and the female speed climbers ride downhill and super-G in Beaver Creek. The races start at 19.00 and will be shown on Viaplay – and can also be followed here. – The “pop” behind there Kajsa Vickhoff Lie herself has recovered from her own back problems, and is ready to run this weekend’s race in Beaver Creek. Ironically, the man who treats her ailments instead developed a back problem. Brynestad is a physio and manual therapist and works for the alpine national team and the Treatment Agency, and these days is with the alpinists on tour in the USA. After having run a trip on the mill himself a little over a week ago, he felt that something was not right. – I got a bit of an acute, good, old-fashioned kink in what is called the sternum, he says. Soon after, he was due to go up and treat Vickhoff Lie. Then he told about his own problem, and she followed up by saying that she could very well try to help. Brynestad instructed the alpinist and explained how it should be done, a so-called bending or manipulation of the back. Then she made a bet. Photo: Marco Trovati / AP – And then I felt that it sort of… It “popped” behind there, says Brynestad. – It was a little broken, and the back got better then and there, but then he woke up the next day and he said I had broken his rib. So then it’s him who’s simply broken. It turned out that the small physiotherapy session had ended with broken ribs for Brynestad. – Afterwards, it felt like it was starting to get a little uncomfortable to breathe deeply and cough and at least sneeze and to some extent also to turn around and move around a bit like that, says Brynestad The Knekke episode was first mentioned in the running podcast Breaking Marathon Limits. – Said I had to give power and speed Brynestad says that as a physiotherapist I learned that you should not use so much power, but that it should happen quickly. Vickhoff Lie, on the other hand, who is not trained as a physiotherapist, but is a top athlete, used somewhat more force. – It just has to happen very quickly, and then you have done what you have to do. But she then chose to do it with … An excessive use of force, we can probably call it, says Brynestad. But according to Vickhoff Lie, she did what she was told. – I think it’s a bit fun to break, so he just let me break the upper part of the back there as usual as you can do to each other, and then he said I had to give power and speed, so I did it, she says . STRONG: Power and speed are so important in racing. Here from one of the podium places last season. Photo: Alessandro Trovati / AP – I have clearly been a rather poor teacher in this context. So that is not my profession, I have understood, acknowledges Brynestad and laughs. Both can laugh about the incident now, and although there were some unpleasant days for Brynestad, it was never serious. – Now I’m completely fine again, so now I hardly feel anything. I’ve had a couple of rest days down in Denver and that helps. It has only caused some grimacing when coughing and sneezing from that bit. Otherwise, it has gone quite well, he says. – The body is ready Although Brynestad may not have had much use for Vickhoff Lie’s help, she has benefited from him. The start of the season suffered a slight setback when she had to stand over the first runs due to back problems. For that reason, she chose to stand over the giant slalom race in Sölden. And now everything looks brighter. – I am glad I have made the choices I have made up to now. And it has gotten much better and better with every week that has passed here. And built up very carefully. So now I at least feel myself, my body is ready at least, says Vickhoff Lie. – It lies and lurks like that sometimes, but now it is very stable. It’s not terribly painful. I barely notice it, but it’s going really well. So no problem now, she says about her back. First there is training on Thursday and Friday, and then she and Marte Monsen will be in action at the weekend. Inni Wembstad is not yet ready to race after the injury she suffered last year.
