The four defendants in the much talked about triple murder case are sentenced to prison. Man sentenced to 1 year and one month in prison and loss of driver’s license for two years. Man sentenced to 1 year and one month in prison and loss of driver’s license for two years. Man sentenced to eight months in prison and loss of driving license for two years. Man sentenced to 90 days in prison. In addition, the three who received the longest sentence and were connected to the tree felling in March must pay NOK 315,000 in compensation. – We must have a thorough review of the verdict before we can say whether we accepted it or whether we want to appeal, says Ivar Eivind Hauge, who is a lawyer for one of those who have received the harshest punishment. Paul-Inge Angelshaug, who is the lawyer for the other person who has received over a year in prison, says it is natural to review the sentence, as it corresponds to what the prosecutor asked for. – An appeal is highly likely, says Angelshaug. Lawyer Bente Hermansen believes the sentencing is severe. – It will be the duck from here on, she says. The four cut down several trees over several different stretches of road in January and March this year. On national highway 5 between Førde and Florø late in the evening of March 23, things went wrong. Being sentenced to prison In the silent darkness of the 1980s, two cars crashed into one of the three, and a third car ended up in the ditch. None of the eleven involved were injured, but several of them told the court that they were in shock. The court emphasized that the actions had the potential to cause serious personal injury or death. – The actions were carried out solely to amuse the defendants, who by their actions played with the lives and health of other road users, the judgment states. Prosecutor Erling Melvær asked the court for unconditional prison terms of 1 year and 1 month for two of the defendants. He was supported in this. DRAMATIC: Two cars drove into a tree that had been felled on national highway 5 between Førde and Florø. He believes they were the main men in “a meaningless game with other people’s lives and health”. He asked for 9 months and 90 days in prison, respectively, for the other two, also without conditions. Here, too, the prosecutor was largely supported. The defenders and the prosecutor say the case is very unusual and special, and there are few other similar cases in Norway. The closest one comes is a case from 1966 where two men felled a pole over a road. Defense attorney Paul-Inge Angelshaug said in his proceedings that the defendants made a rash move, and that none of them intended to harm anyone. The tree felling case in Sunnfjord was very demanding and almost unique. That made it an extra nut for both the prosecutor, the defenders and the judges. Here we see the defenders: Left: Paul-Inge Angelshaug, Bente Hermansen, Ivar Hauge and Ivar Blikra Photo: Astrid S. Korsvoll / news – We have to call a spade a spade: It was reindeer idiocy. Wanted to see if people got annoyed – We were bored and wanted to come up with something, was the answer the defendants gave as an explanation for why they did what they did. They said that they wanted to see how people reacted when there was suddenly a tree in the road. Annoying people and preventing them from getting to work. One of the trees they placed in a bend, and another tree they dragged further out into the road so that it would prevent the cars better. The vehicle that crashed into the tree was heavily damaged and had to be scrapped. The defendants had to pay compensation for the damages. Photo: The police A couple of times they also hid to see how people reacted, it emerged in court. Among other things, they grinned and laughed when a contractor had to move out and remove one of the trees, But when the case went to Sogn og Fjordane district court at the end of November, laughter was replaced by seriousness. Dumpa motor saga The four Sunnfjords in their 20s said it was never their intention to hurt anyone. It was only when two cars crashed into the tree that they understood the seriousness, and they heard screams and cries. Nevertheless, they ran away from the city without helping, which they also stood accused of in court. In court, the defendants explained that they panicked. They got rid of the chainsaw and the work clothes they had used, and did not report to the police. The police received a tip after the tree felling case on 23 March. That led them on the trail of some of the defendants. Surveillance footage showed that they bought chainsaw petrol that same evening at a petrol station. Traffic cameras also showed that they were at the place where the tree was felled. Photo: Astrid Iren Solheim / news In court it emerged that they took turns keeping watch, lighting with flashlights, and cutting down the tree. Two of them were there in both January and March, while the other two were there one evening each. Lawyer Ivar Blikra represents the man who received the shortest prison sentence. He has no comment other than that his client wants time to think about the appeal issue. Published 11.12.2024, at 13.45 Updated 11.12.2024, at 15.23
