– I would like to be at work, I have my own career to think about. Nils Jakob Hoff tells news. He is present at Beitostølen, where his wife Therese Johaug starts in earnest on the road to the World Ski Championships in Trondheim in three months. But for the whole cabal to end, the Hoff/Johaug family has had to take clear steps. Because while Johaug is now fully focused on skiing, Hoff has paternity leave from his full-time job as an anesthetist at Ahus. – Her dreams are my dreams and vice versa. You can’t do this halfway if you have the ambitions she has. Then we just have to make arrangements for it, says Hoff. – We are a team, he says. It was during a training session on the treadmill that Johaug realized that it had been too much. – She breathes in a characteristic way and I noticed that it doesn’t sound like Therese. Then I went out and looked at him. It didn’t look very good, says Hoff. During the autumn, things had picked up for Johaug. 100 hours of training every month, projects in other arenas that she continues to say yes to. In addition, the role of mother came to 1.5-year-old Kristin, who did not sleep particularly well at night. It came to light during the interval session on the treadmill out in the hallway at home in their house in Holmenkollen. – She just couldn’t get her breathing to work, and there was just a lot of lactic acid, says Hoff about the episode. Johaug herself says that she was angry and that the words she shouted are not suitable for use in the media. The husband says that they then had to make a new plan. – It was also clear to me that we have to take measures here, says Hoff, and continued: – Then she got mad at herself and her own achievements. We had a clear and unambiguous conversation that something must now happen. – How did that conversation go? – She was quite angry with herself for not achieving what she was supposed to achieve. And then we talked a bit about it, and she was very clear that now I have to make changes. Will Therese Johaug become WC queen in Trondheim? Yes, of course. She is completely raw! No, she is too old and lazy. Show result Medical dream on hold After the serious talk, Hoff took action. He quickly contacted his boss at Ahus. – I went straight to work the next day. I just told the boss that “now I have to pull on the brakes”. – And then they land on? – Ahus is fantastic at it, so he (Hoff’s boss) just arranged as best as possible. First he took a few weeks of holiday, before going on leave this week. At home, he and his daughter Kristin moved into their own room, while Johaug got to sleep by himself. – Then she comes to us when she wants to, says Hoff with a smile. And it will be like this at least until 9 March 2025. Then both the WC and Johaug’s career will be over. According to plan. Photo: Joakim Halvorsen / NTB – Suddenly it’s not that long until the Olympics The 36-year-old has been ready for a long time, most recently this week. The husband is still not entirely convinced that the Ski WC is actually the end of Johaug’s career. – I’m never sure about anything with her, says Hoff with a grin. – Why not? – She has an incredible drive when it comes to sports. She says that she wants to go to the WC and then it will be over, but suddenly it’s not that long until the Olympics, so I don’t know, says Hoff. The former rower and now anesthesiologist says that he has made it quite clear to his wife that he wants to focus on his career in the future. – My dream is to become a pre-hospital doctor who works outside a hospital on an ambulance or helicopter or something like that. It’s a long way, because there are many good people who stand in line and want it, he says. Right now the dream is put on hold. In the first half until after the WC in Trondheim. – I think she shares my dream, in the same way that I share the dream that she will be able to go skiing then, says Hoff.
