An undersea internet cable from Lithuania to Sweden was destroyed on Sunday, the Swedish telecommunications company Telia informs Lithuanian broadcasting. – The cable was cut on Sunday morning, around 10 o’clock. The systems immediately showed that the connection was broken. Further investigation was launched and it turns out that it has been destroyed, says Telia’s Chief Technology Officer Andrius Šemeškevičius to Lithuanian LRT. Telia transfers internet to Sweden from Lithuania via three cables, which meant that the bandwidth was reduced by a third. However, this was rectified via detours, he explains. The news comes on the same day that it became known that an undersea telecommunications cable between Finland and Germany has broken. The two countries have expressed concern in a joint statement, but it is currently unclear what caused the cable to catch fire. (NTB)
