Russia will send around 120 missiles and 90 drones into Ukraine overnight. That’s what the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyj, wrote on Telegram on Sunday morning. Mayor of Kyiv, Vitalij Klitschko, wrote in a message on Telegram that debris from the rockets had fallen in several places in the area around the capital. According to the Kyiv Independent, explosions were heard in the cities of Kropyvnytskyi, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, Cherkasy, Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa and Zaporizhzhya. – One of the biggest airstrikes we have seen, writes Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha on X. The attack takes place shortly after Russia last week sent several soldiers to the front, including around 10,000 soldiers from North Korea, writes the Washington Post. The RIA news agency writes that the Russian Ministry of Defense confirms that they have carried out a massive attack against Ukraine. According to them, the target was critical infrastructure for electricity and defence. – The alarm has been going off all night – We have been in a bomb shelter in Kyiv all night, says Ingrid Joys, who is secretary general of the aid organization Caritas Norway. They are there to help the local population with, among other things, field kitchens and water purification. Joys has been in Ukraine to see the aid projects they have along the front. The Ukrainians are preparing for a very hard winter, she says. Ingrid Joys in Caritas, here not far from the front in Donetsk county. It turned out well, because the alarm has been going off all night, says Joys. She also says that they have heard the air force come in. It is the first time she has heard such bangs, she says. – When you travel into Ukraine, you know that it is a country at war. Being in a bomb bay felt quite safe, but it was an extra twist when you hear missiles and hits, says Joys, who says the whole thing was unpleasant. Photo: Ukranian Emergency Service / AFP – Long-term strategy from Russia Amund Osflaten, head teacher at Krigsskulen, tells news that Sunday’s attack was large. – As I have understood the Ukrainians, Russia has not used a missile for several months. It is probably something they have collected, in order to carry out a larger undertaking, says Osflaten. The fact that the attack is happening now is not accidental, Osflaten believes. Russia focused its attack on energy infrastructure, before winter, when Ukrainians depend on electricity. He believes this has been a long-term strategy on the Russian side. And although the Ukrainian air defense system is in good condition to face smaller attacks, it becomes more difficult when the scale is so large. – When a lot of missiles arrive at the same time, the system becomes saturated. There are limitations in the air defense that make it possible for a large number of missiles to slip through. Emergency services at a residence outside Mykolajiv on Sunday morning.
