Hadi Matar is charged with attempted murder of author Salman Rushdie (75), writes the Reuters news agency. It is the district attorney in Chautauqua in the state of New York who issued the charges. Friday evening Norwegian time, the 24-year-old from New Jersey was arrested after stabbing the author just before he was to give a lecture. Photo: AP After the publication of the book “Satanic Verses”, Rushdie received a death sentence from the then supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini. The reason for the death sentence was that Khomeini thought the book was blasphemous. Rushdie has therefore lived with death threats for over 30 years. Salman Rushdie is said to have been stabbed several times on stage.
