Rescue crews, the coastguard and the police were called to Traigh Mhor Beach to help the whales. But only 15 of them were still alive, and two of the most lively were tried to be helped back into the water. But eventually it became clear that it was impossible to save the whales due to high seas and because they had been out of the water for a long time, and they were therefore euthanized. The experts believe that the entire pod may have been following a female whale with problems. Pilot whales are social creatures, and if one of the pack gets into trouble and runs aground, the others follow suit. (NTB)
