Many of the newly discovered species are already threatened with extinction. One of the new species discovered along the Mekong is the blue-bellied lizard. Adult lizards can change color as a defense mechanism, especially males who are territorial and aggressive. Every year, researchers discover new animal and plant species in the biologically rich natural area along the Mekong River, which flows through China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. In the report, WWF encourages the authorities in the region to increase their efforts to preserve the rare species and their habitats.
