– I didn’t exactly have time to think about much else than just getting the plane down safely, Jip Verwer tells news. He was at an altitude of around 4,000 feet and on his way back to Notodden airport after a round trip to Gaustablikk, when the propeller on the plane stopped. It took a few seconds for it to sink in. But I found a road that I could land on, between forest and marsh, and headed there, he says. Verwer attempted to increase airspeed in an attempt to restart the propeller, but was unsuccessful. – I had to give up that idea, and ended up on that path. There were tall trees on the sides and the plane reached just over the ploughshares, he says. He adds that it was a safe landing, just without an engine and in an unknown place. He landed in the middle of county road 3430, Tuddalsvegen in Hjartdal in Telemark Jip Verwer is looking forward to flying again after he had to make an emergency landing on county road 3430, Tuddalsvegen on Tuesday evening. Photo: Privat All procedures correct – The plane, which is of the Piper Cub type, is just as complete, only that it is now in the forest instead of at an airport, says Verwer. With the help of the first car driver who came to the scene, he was able to notify the police, among other things. – I was standing in the middle of the road, and was allowed to borrow the phone, as my phone had no coverage. Then I was able to call the people I needed to get help. The police received a report about the incident at around 8.25pm on Tuesday evening. – It appears that the pilot has carried out all procedures correctly. It has only been the pilot in the plane. Both he and the plane are unharmed, says operations manager Vegar Dale Møane in the South-East police district. Not daunted, the 21-year-old, who on a daily basis works as an apprentice aircraft mechanic at the aircraft engineering department, has had a pilot’s license since he was 17 years old. Verwer, who lives at Notodden and is often out flying, has not been daunted by the incident. – I was a little shaky after the incident, but I would ideally like to fly again tomorrow.
