15 July 2023 at 18:52 2,000 evacuated due to forest fire on La Palma At least 2,000 people have been evacuated as a result of a forest fire on the Spanish Canary island of La Palma. The fire started on Saturday morning near the village of Puntagorda in the northwest of La Palma. Persistent drought and strong winds mean the fire is spreading quickly, the village’s mayor Vicente Rodriguez told RTVE. The wind is constantly changing direction, and the fire brigade has not been able to extinguish the flames. At least eleven houses have burned down, and an area of around 1.4 square kilometers has been destroyed. La Palma’s authorities have warned that the homes further south, in the town of Tijarafe, will also have to be evacuated as a result of the fire. (NTB)
